The TMBO Lounge Chair represents one of the most distinctive pieces of Danish mid-century design, originally conceived by renowned architect Magnus Læssøe Stephensen in 1935. Now beautifully revived by Mazo under the guidance of the designer's grandson, this iconic chair embodies the dramatic simplicity and laid-back confidence that Stephensen found in Japanese design tradition.
The chair's name "TMBO" means elephant in Swahili, capturing the essence of its most distinctive feature - the cozy "elephant-like ears" that provide arm support and envelope users in comfort. Originally designed for the prestigious Magasin Du Nord department store in Copenhagen, the TMBO chair was ahead of its time and continues to inspire furniture designers today.
Characterized by its sinuous silhouette and gently angled backrest, the TMBO chair features a significant curved form that promises to support your back as you lean back and relax. The design philosophy moves away from ornate aesthetics toward functional simplicity, creating furniture meant for everyday use rather than mere decoration.
